19 years after my graduation,(just last year) I took part in the Alumni Iniation. It was really an awe inspiring event, and I think the secrecy is appropriate. I can see how it will be appreciated by the Senior undergraduates, as they transition to alumnus.

I'm in europe and doing this on a blackberry. One of the reasons for Chris Miller's proposal that the ceremony be secret was the fact that delta chi has a long tradition of having more secrets than other fraternities. Thus, having a secret alumni ceremony was part of giving it some Delta chi character.

shouldn't be a part of ritual to which I'm not

Hey John. Do you think AMs should be allowed to watch an initiation ceremony before they are initiated? Seems to me this is a similar point. I know this discuussion is about Delta Chi, but I can tell you in Masonry no one is allowed to attend any of the 41 ceremonies before they go through each of them. For the 1st 3 they have to pass a test in open lodge before they can move on.

2. The active chapter hands over its ritual kit to
alumni to perform the ceremony. The problem isn't that
the alumni use the chapter's ritual kit, but that the
chapter often has to be booted from the chapter locale
while the AC goes on. I can recall a few Saturday
mornings in Ruston when the active chapter had to wake
up, unlock the ritual closet, unlock the ritual trunk,
and sit on the opposite side of the street or amuse
themselves elsewhere for 45 minutes while the Alumni
Ceremony was conducted at the house. Perhaps timing
could be improved, but I recall this pissing off a
number of actives. It would have upset me too to wake
up at 8:00am to hand over the ritual kit and chill out
across the street while a ceremony, in Delta Chi
ritualistic form, that I couldn't attend was going on
in the house where I eat, study, shower, etc.
It's not the Chapter's ritual kit. It belongs to the fraternity. I have gotten up countless [no hyperbole] times to attend initiations at 0700 or 0800. Contrawise - I've been up to 0300 several times to complete the ceremony. No biggy. If you love Delta Chi, you sacrifice a little convenience every now and then, n'est pas?

ITB,
Chris
